"Thy will be done"... "Hagase tu voluntad"

Hello! This is my first blog post since I got back from my mission. Being able to serve in Argentina was one of the greatest experiences of my life!

So today I was reading in Moses 4 about the life before this life when we all lived with our Heavenly Father. In this life, we held a Great Council, where our Father told us that He had a plan, a plan that would give us the chance to be like Him. This plan is known as the Plan of Salvation, the Plan of Redemption, or the Great Plan of Happiness! As it says in Job-- "When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy..." (Job 38:7)
But there must be opposition in all things. Lucifer (now called Satan) wanted to change the plan. He wanted to take away our freedom to choose.
He said, "Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor."
Once, someone pointed out the pronouns in this statement: ""Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor." (Moses 4:1)

Thankfully, there was another son, and this is what He said: "Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever." (Moses 4:2)
The second Son, Jesus Christ, was chosen to be our Savior and Redeemer. We keep our freedom to choose but have a chance to repent from the wrong choices we make.
More on that later.

For now, I want to focus on what Christ said, and when He said it. He said, "Father, thy will be done." And He said it during a time when another was seeking for power. Rather than combat Satan's idea with a "bigger" and "better" idea, Christ submitted Himself humbly before the Father.
Then I started thinking about the other times that Christ had spoken that phrase.

He said it again in the middle of His mortal ministry when He was surrounded by followers.
"And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth." (Luke 11:2, emphasis added)

Then, when He was alone, in the height of His suffering, He pleaded: "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."
Isn't it amazing that He used the same humble phrase when He was accepting His mission and when He was fulfilling it? He used it when He ascended above all God's children and when He descended below all things. He used it in good times and in bad.

How am I doing? Am I accepting the will of God? Even when it's hard?
In my hardest times, do I humbly recognize that I might be fulfilling my calling?

I love the Lord, and He loves us. As we submit ourselves to the Father, He will strengthen us for our callings and help us to become better.

A Dangerous Force

There is a frightening battle that is being fought throughout the world. As Pres. Gordon B Hinkley says, "the production and peddling of which has become a multimillion-dollar industry where a few get rich and multitudes become enslaved and debauched."
This destructive agent is pornography.

It seems that we are facing it everywhere. On billboards, computers, phones, pop-ups. Even in a work environment we may be shown by a colleague or at school by a friend.
Here are some scary stats (found on Covenant Eyes): 1 in 5 mobile searches are for porn; 9 out of 10 boys (and 6 out of 10 girls)are exposed to porn before they're 18  with the average age being 12.

Research reveals many systemic effects of Internet pornography that are undermining an already vulnerable culture of marriage and family. Even more disturbing is the fact that the first Internet generations have not reached full maturity, so the upper limits of this impact have yet to be realized"- Jill Manning, Sociologist
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints posted this video
"What Should I do when I See Pornography?"

After we've protected ourselves, how can we help protect others? Again from Gordon B Hinkley:
I hope you are so busy studying good books that lead to productive thinking and so pleased with the opportunity that you have to mix with others of your kind ... that you have no time to waste on the filth and rot we call pornography.
When I read that I thought, What if we reached out to those who are less social or more shy? It makes sense that the less you feel wanted by real people the more time you spend with virtual people. Let's help them feel wanted.

I hope that your awareness of this problem and the awareness you'll give to your family and friends helps to end this destructive plague that is surrounding the world in chains.

I know that through the love and grace of Jesus Christ we can change. We can escape any trap Satan has set for us. Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ love us so much and want us to be free. They want us to reach our full potential. They want us to be happy.
Please trust them with your internet use, with your family, with your destiny. They will take you to heights that you never could imagine.

Temptation Killers

My family discovered Hank Smith last year. He's a youth speaker and seminary teacher. A lot of his talks are on CDs (10 of which we own :)). On his CD "5 Temptation Killers" he talks about how to fight Satan.
Temptation killer #3 is the scriptures.
He tells the story of Jesus fasting on the mountain. Satan comes and tries to tempt Jesus. Every time Jesus comes back with a scripture.
The challenge then was for us to come up with our own "Temptation Killing Scriptures."

These are a few I've found:
2 Nephi 4:28 Awake, my soul! No longer droop in sin. Rejoice, O my heart, and give place no more for the enemy of my soul.
Alma 11:23 O thou child of hell, why tempt ye me? Knowest thou that the righteous yieldeth to no such temptations?
Alma 12: 6 And behold I say unto you all that this was a snare of the adversary, which he has laid to catch this people, that he might bring you into subjection unto him, that he might encircle you about with his chains, that he might chain you down to everlasting destruction, according to the power of his captivity.
(Now from the Bible :))
1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (Also my brother's favorite scripture)

What are some of your temptation killing scriptures?

Grace Series Part 6: Like Tuning a Violin

I was tuning my violin the other day, when I ran out of fine tuner. In case you're unfamiliar with how to tune a violin, there is a fine tuner and a tuning peg. The fine tuners are what you'll usually use, they refine the note until it's perfect. If it's really out of tune you'll use your tuning peg.

So I had turned my fine tuner to the lowest it could go. I knew what to do, I'd done it before. You bring your string out of tune by twisting the fine tuner until it's about half way and then you use your tuning pegs to bring it back to the relative area.
As I did that, I realized that this is what God is doing to us. We are so close to getting something great or becoming something wonderful, and then suddenly it seems everything is going wrong or all of Satan's forces are attacking us.

It's like the arrow analogy:

42 Evidences of the True Church of Christ

I just finished this amazing book called "The Greatest Quest" (by Blaine and Brenton Yorgason). It's about a group of college students during WWII (one of whom was an atheist), who look through the Bible to see what elements were involved in Christ's original church. They came up with 15 points at first, but over the years, they found 42 "evidences" that would identify a church that had the same blueprint as Christ's.
Their reasoning for wanting a church that mirrored Christ's from Jerusalem was the principle that Christ is perfect, therefore his church would be perfect. (see also evidence #32)
I really enjoyed following them as they visited different churches and honestly tried to figure out if their teachings went along with the list they'd compiled.
Although this book is a novel, it's based on a true story.

I'm personally going to go through my Bible and highlight the verses they picked out, and identify how my church applies those 'evidences.'

There are many other deep questions, answers, and spiritual discussion, but here are the 42 points they found and the scriptures that supported them:
(Note, I don't mean to violate any copyrighted material, and I don't claim any of this as mine)

*Ezekiel 37:15-17
*Isaiah 29:18
*Revelation 20:12-14

*Hebrews 13:8-9

*Galatians 5:22-26
*Ephesians1:17

Grace Series Part 5-- "Love of Christ" 1 Corinthians 8:35-39

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
... 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Fear vs. Faith, Hope, and Charity

FEAR is a scary word. It paralyzes our potential; it stops our success; and it can contaminate our character.
Fear is one of the devil's main weapons. How can we fight against it?

I have three words for you: faith, hope, and charity.
Any one of those principles will get rid of your fear, and lead you on to the next principle.

"Power of Hope"

Faith of Abinadi
Through the years we learn that challenges to our faith are not new, and they aren’t likely to disappear soon. But true disciples of Christ see opportunity in the midst of opposition.

In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Abinadi was bound and brought before the evil King Noah. Although the king vigorously opposed Abinadi and eventually sentenced him to death, Abinadi boldly taught the gospel and bore his testimony anyway. Because Abinaditook advantage of that opportunity, a priest named Alma was converted to the gospel and brought many souls unto Christ. The courage of Abinadi and Alma was Christian courage.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Finally, the perfect example of fearlessness: Christ.
One of the symptoms of fear is sleeplessness; Christ could sleep through a storm. Think about that.

No Regrets-- How your Decisions Determine your Destiny

There was a beautiful lesson today in Young Women's. "Why do the Choices I make Matter?" Why do they matter? If there is no tomorrow-- no life after death-- they don't really matter, do they?
Well let's assume that there is life after death*. Now do your choices matter? Well, only if there is a rule for happiness in the next life.
There's a great scripture about people who think that way:
2 Nephi 28:Yea, and there shall be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die; and it shall be well with us.
And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear God—he will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God.
Yea, and there shall be many which shall teach after this manner, false and vain and foolish doctrines, and shall be puffed up in their hearts, and shall seek deep to hide their counsels from the Lord; and their works shall be in the dark."
Now here's the response to that line of thinking:
"2 Nephi 2:13 And if ye shall say there is no law, ye shall also say there is no sin. If ye shall say there is no sin, ye shall also say there is no righteousness. And if there be no righteousness there be no happiness. And if there be no righteousness nor happiness there be no punishment nor misery. And if these things are not there is no God. And if there is no God we are not, neither the earth; for there could have been no creation of things, neither to act nor to be acted upon; wherefore, all things must have vanished away."

From these scriptures, I have obtained a testimony that YES, there is life after death; YES, there is a judgement; and YES, we do need to meet up to the Lord's standards through our choices.

These are some boys who followed their standards, and were blessed exceedingly for their choice:

A big danger in today's society is this philosophy: "There is no right or wrong. What's wrong for you can be right for me, and I don't think it's wrong to get drunk every weekend." Relative morality is dangerous, and it is a false philosophy.

In the Screwtape Letters by C.S.Lewis, Screwtape tells Wormwood (the devil he is training) that one of the greatest tools the devil has is to tell people that there is no devil. Once they get someone to accept that idea, they can whisper whatever they want to that person, and the person will act on it; never choosing to believe that they are following an evil influence. However, even if they choose to believe it (or rather, to not believe it), that doesn't mean that they don't feel the negative effects in their heart. That is, unless they've numbed themselves.
My dad describes your conscience in this way: it's like a triangle. When you do something wrong, it will give a little turn, and prick you, to tell you that it's wrong. But if you keep on turning that triangle, the edges will wear, until you end up with a circle. It continues to whirl around, trying to warn you of the danger you've stumbled into, but you can't feel it anymore.

As you make decisions, try to make them so that you can live life with no regrets.

When you watch this video, try to think of ways that the Devil is trying to "lead you carefully down to hell." (For me, it's watching action movies that have swearing and immoral references. That is a standard I have set for myself.)

I know that our decisions really will determine where we go. Where we go in this life, and where we'll go after. It is completely worth it to live with "no regrets." It truly will be easier in the long run to set standards for themselves. We can make it, we can stand up for ourselves!

Absolute Truth

Tova Biesinger
Sep. 16th, 2014
Absolute Truth
What is two plus two?
"Four," would be the average response. But about all the unknowns? Two of what plus two of what? What type of equal are we looking for?
For example, what if the equation was asking for the amount of apples on two apple trees plus two acres of apple trees?
The world today is confusing, and it's hard to find absolute truth. But there are absolute truths out there. How do we find them? I thought you'd never ask...
The first method is using your intuition; also known as your conscience or the Light of Christ. Although you can be trained to ignore this voice, it will always be there if you have the desire to listen. Deep within us we have a burning will to do what's right, we have a yearning for the truth. As long as we are humble enough to hear and heed that whisper, it will guide us.
Another guide is the word of prophets, or spiritual leaders. Forms of scripture fall under this category. Scriptures assist you in fine-tuning your conscience. They offer experiences of those who've gone before, and words of God. That is another way to find truth. If it is the word of God, it is true. (Titus 1:2)
The final way to discern truth, is to look at the results. The scriptures say that "… by their fruits ye shall know them." (Matt 7:20) Hitler is a fine example. He came forward telling the Germans how wonderful he could make Germany. Did he use true principles? The "fruit" of his work was Germany in smolders, and millions of Jews and others inhumanely killed. One the other hand, Joan of Arc promised the same thing: to save France. Did she  use true principles? Her "fruit" was a free France, a stronger king, and an inspiring death.
And there you have it: use the Light of Christ, the word of God, and try to see the results. By using those three tools, we can disperse the darkness that Satan is trying to pull over our eyes. We can see through the lies of the world, and find those precious truths that our souls desire so much. Not only that, we can search for our real selves. We can dig past the lies that we and others tell us, and become the royal child of God we were made to be.

Screwtape Letter and the Devil

Again, for my class, we read the Screwtape Letters (an AMAZING book; it makes you look at temptation, and all the little things that come with it). After discussing it, we were challenged to write our own letters. We could do it from any perspective, and send it to any of the characters. I chose to write as the human that Screwtape and Wormwood were trying to tempt:

Dear Screwtape and Wormwood,
Looking down from heaven, and reviewing my life, I'd like to thank you for the role you played in my temptation. It is accurate to say that "there is opposition in all things."
Because of the constant need to fight you, I grew stronger, and became closer to, as you call Him, the Enemy. And as a result of my closeness to Him, I was able to become even stronger in resisting you, (truly, as they say, He has "one eternal round").
I do lament your deplorable profession, but realize it's value.
Please realize, that you have no power. The Enemy could destroy you, your colleagues, your leader, and your kingdom; the reason he does not is the same reason I thank you: opposition.
Just as businesses need opposition to thrive, so people need it to realize their genuine opinions and beliefs. But some businesses crumple under the opposition. Thankfully, we humans have been promised that we will never "be tempted above that which (we) are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that (we) may be able to bear it."
So, dear Screwtape, you will lose. The victory will come to the righteous and their King.
Sincerely yours,
Christian

The Church defines the Devil as "the enemy of righteousness and of those who seek to do the will of God. ... Since the time the devil was cast out of heaven, he has sought constantly to deceive all men and women and lead them away from the work of God in order to make all mankind as miserable as he is."

Elder Holland (one of my favorite speakers in General Conference!) said "We speak boldly because Satan is a real being set on destroying you, and you face his influence at a younger and younger age."
There are two videos that he speaks in that refer to Satan's subtle power, and how we need to constantly be alert to him:
Watch Your Step
Stay Within the Lines

I know that Satan is a real being, and that he is miserable. He fights the light of Christ in each of us, and tries to persuade us to follow him to everlasting sorrow.
But we don't have to listen. "God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be btempted above that ye are able; but will with the ctemptation also make a way to descape, that ye may be able to ebear it" (1 Corinthinas 10:13)

Agency.... what is that?

The agency I'm thinking of isn't specifically business, or anything like that.
This agency is the freedom to choose. God gave us our agency before we were born. Next to the gift of life, agency is the second greatest gift we've ever recieved.
Why is that, you may ask? (You should read the Giver. It's not an LDS book, but it's a story that illustrates what life might be like if our agency were taken away.) The purpose of this life is to show that we will CHOOSE to follow Heavenly Father and His plan. How can we do that if we can't choose?

When we were still innocent spirits, living with our Heavenly Father, He told us about His plan: that we'd come to earth, have bodies, and have a chance to prove that we'd CHOOSE His way. He told us that someone would go to earth and pay the price for us, so that we could repent of our mistakes. After He told us this, someone stood up, and announced that they had a different plan.
This is Lucifer. Satan. His plan took away our agency, and forced us to follow his directions. He would take all the glory for himself.
Then, yet another person stood up.
It was Jesus. Our Savior. He told everyone that God's plan was the perfect plan. He offered Himself as the sacrifice so that we could return.
There was then a war in heaven, and we each CHOSE which side we'd fight for. If you are reading this, you chose the right side-- God's side. I know this, because everyone who fought with God was able to come to earth, and have their agency.

This is a great scripture illustrating the two main choices we have in this life: 27 Wherefore, men are afree according to the bflesh; and call things are dgiven them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to echoose fliberty and eternal glife, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be hmiserable like unto himself.
28 And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great aMediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit; (2 Nephi 2:27-28, Book of Mormon)
Now, just because there's a choice doesn't mean that there are no consequences. Like the scripture says, your choice determines the consequences: liberty and eternal life, or captivity with the devil.
"For the Strength of Youth" (a book which outlines the standards of the church specifically for teenagers) says this about agency: You are responsible for the choices you make. God is mindful of you and will help you make good choices...
So you aren't alone in your endeavor for righteousness.
Also, "as (you) obey each of (your) Heavenly Father's commandments, (you) grow in wisdom and strength of character. (Your) faith increases. (You) find it easier to make right choices." (Gospel Principles, pg 19.)

I know that if we use our agency wisely and make the right choices, that we will be able to live with God again. I know that He trusted us enough to give us agency. I know that it is possible for EVERYONE to make it Home.

The Devil

As I was reading my scriptures this morning, I read the story of Korihor, the anti-Christ in the Book of Mormon.
Korihor goes around preaching that there isn't a God, and that the leaders of the church are ust lying to the people to have fun, and that they are taking the money of the people and using it to buy rich stuff, basically.
Well, some of the people take Korihor, and bring him to the chief judge, where Korihor criticizes him, too. The cheif judge sees that Korihor is determined to be right, and so he send him to Alma. Alma bears his testimony, and tells Korihor that he is wrong, and that there is a God.
Korihor demands a sign, and Alma says that if God will send a sign, "let it be that you are struck dumb." Sure enough, the next time Korihor opens his mouth, he can't talk.
He then realizes his error, and writes that he is sorry, that the devil appeared to him like an angel, and told him all the things that he had preached.
Then he goes off, and begs for food. He eventually gets trampled by some people.

The last verse in the chapter says this: "60 And thus we see the end of him who aperverteth the ways of the Lord; and thus we see that the devil will not bsupport his children at the last day, but doth speedily drag them down to chell." (Alma 30:60)

I saw a skit about this once, when 'Dorothy' was walking down the 'yellow-brick road', and some bad people came up to her, and got her to go off of the road. Then they left her, and she was lost and alone. (then some REAL friends come and help her, but that isn't applicable to this).

The devil doesn't want us to be happy. He is jealous of our bodies, and want us to misuse them. He wants us to be miserable. So following him won't get us anywhere except for to misery.

I recently finished reading "The Screwtape Letters" and there are some really interesting insights in there. It's a book full of letters from one devil (Screwtape) to another. He talks a lot about how the devils are just trying to tell you lies, and there is a logical way to think your way out of it, but they try to keep your mind away from that logic. He also talks about how Heavenly Father loves us, and actually wants us to be happy. But the devils just want you to come down to where they are. They only want your misery.

So RESIST! You are mightier then the devil!

I'm going to end with this scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation ataken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be btempted above that ye are able; but will with the ctemptation also make a way to descape, that ye may be able to ebear it
